After training twice a day on Wednesday and Thursday, Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Patrick Durkin Cummins received a day off from their trainer, Ryan Parsons, who asked us to postpone today’s training at Renovacao Fight Team (the biggest Luta Livre team in Brazil) until Monday, their last day in Brazil.

“Their bodies need to rest,” reasoned Parsons, asking me to apologize to Marcio Cromado, the leader of RFT.

On a sunny day in Rio, “resting” definitely doesn’t mean staying in the hotel room, sleeping. The Americans could take in some normal entertainment, like spending the day on the beach, just how most cariocas (people born in Rio) love to do, but Cummins and Miller are adrenaline addicts. So, they decided to experience the unique sensation of hang gliding in the skies of Rio.

“Oh my God, I’m definitely too excited to have this experience,” Miller said as he reached the ramp of Pedra Bonita in the Sao Conrado district, seeing the amazing view of Sao Conrado Beach.

When the instructor, Luciano Popo, began explaining the details of the moment of the jump, the funny Miller started to sing and jump at the same time, making Popo laugh. But, when I asked Miller to pose for a picture with Cummins on the edge of the ramp, and he jumped over Pat’s shoulder, the instructor started to worry.

“Sorry to ask,” he said, seriously. “But this man looks like he’s plugged into 220 volts of electricity. It looks like he doesn’t need wings to fly. Did he use some ‘additive’?” When I explained that Miller was naturally that excited, the guy just laughed and relaxed.

While the equipment was being mounted, the climate started to get a little bit tense between the pilots, as the wind suddenly decreased.

“The only thing that can make a pilot abort a flight is a tailwind, or no wind,” explained Pedro Barriga, the pilot who would fly with Cummins. “Let’s wait and see if it gets better.”

Barriga and Cummins were second in a long line of hang gliders ready to take off, while Miller was third. When the winds decreased, the first pilot in line gave up, and Cummins moved up to first.

After five minutes, a very weak wind came, and Pedro told Cummins, “Just hug my shoulder and run with me. One... two... three... go!”

Looking very calm, Cummins followed the pilot’s command and, in three seconds, was already experiencing the amazing sensation of flight.

In that moment, for the first time in last two hours, our Jim Carrey of MMA fell absolutely silent. As soon as Miller heard his own command and started to run, “Mayhem’s” adrenaline exploded once again and he started to scream, showing all his excitement for flying.

Since the wind wasn’t too strong, their flight from the ramp to the beach only took around 15 minutes, but the short flight didn’t decrease the level of excitement for either fighter.
