Marcelo Alonso and Gleidson Venga On Sunday, Jason, Pat and Ryan will spend the morning on the famous Pepe Beach. Located one kilometer from their hotel, it’s considered the best beach spot in Rio. Right after that, they’ll lunch and go to Botafogo to see the Shooto Brazil event promoted by Andre Pederneiras from Nova Uniao. On Monday, the guys will enjoy their last day in Rio training in Renovocao Fight Team, the top Luta Livre team in Brazil. |
Marcelo Alonso and Gleidson Venga Jason left BTT headquarters thanking Murilo Bustamante: “Thank you very much for making one of my dreams come true.” After eating a sandwich with acai at the famous Bibi Sucos (the most famous juice place in Rio), the guys finished the day taking in the sunset on Ipanema Beach. “What an amazing standard of life you guys have here in Rio,” said Ryan Parsons. “After our week here, one thing keeps intriguing me: why do so many Brazilian people come to live in the U.S.?” |
Marcelo Alonso and Gleidson Venga On the other side of the dojo, Cummins also had some good submission training with two other black belts. Feeling much more comfortable, Cummins even accepted starting in guard position and trying to sweep. He tapped just once, when he trained with Milton Vieira, who used a different guillotine to tap him. “Bro, be careful, this guy is slick,” said Miller. After sparring ended, Murilo asked everyone to make the traditional circle in the middle of the dojo. Everybody hugged and, after thanking Jason, Pat and Ryan for visiting BTT, Murilo asked everybody to join hands and do the traditional end-of-practice screaming: “Brazilian Top Team!” Right after that, Jason got everybody laughing, imitating “Toquinho’s” face and style of walk. “This man is a ball of muscles,” said the funny Miller, sitting in the dojo and starting a conversation with Ryan and Pat. “Man, that was an amazing experience. In the U.S., I used to be the big dog as far as jiu-jitsu. In here, I feel like a beginner. There are always tougher guys to tap me out and make me feel like I need to come to Brazil more to improve my ground game.” |
Marcelo Alonso and Gleidson Venga The second round of sparring was devoted to takedowns and submissions. This time, Miller started with “Toquinho,” and the pair engaged in some really tough training. In the first minute, “Toquinho” took Miller down and got his back. Miller defended the rear-naked choke, but “Toquinho” grabbed his arm and attacked with an arm lock, just as he did in his UFC debut. Miller tried to escape, but ended up tapping. “You got me really fast,” said Jason, touching gloves and restarting the fight. In the second part of the sparring, “Toquinho” took Miller down again and attacked with an ankle lock, Jason escaped and was starting to attack “Toquinho’s” guard when time ran out. “Man, this guy’s amazing. I really want to train with him one more time,” said Miller, who faced two other black belts afterward in submission-only rules. One of them was Vitor Pimenta, who escaped from a tight rear-naked choke from Miller. The other was Milton Vieira, known in Brazil as the inventor of anaconda choke. Even weighting in at 169 lbs., a full weight class lower than “Mayhem,” Vieira tapped Miller twice with his trademark move. “This guy is slick. I’ve never seen this variation of [the anaconda],” said Miller, who asked Milton to show him the move. Vieira taught him another way to apply the hold, which is also a favorite of Miller’s. |
Marcelo Alonso After a 10 minute warm-up, Murilo assigned pairs and started the training with takedowns. “Toquinho” (a nickname which means “little tree stump”) paired up with Pat Cummins, and the two went toe-to-toe for five minutes. Actually, “Toquinho” took Cummins down once, and Cummins answered. “This kind of material is really slippery to train takedowns,” said Pat, pointing to the sweat-soaked canvas. |
Marcelo Alonso Today, Jason “Mayhem” Miller was especially excited to have the opportunity to train with the famed Brazilian Top Team. “Man, I always dreamed of training in that place,” he says. “It’s one of the meccas of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I’m really excited to go there.” After a 20 minute drive from the Sheraton Hotel in Barra to the ABBB Club in Lagoa district, we were welcomed at the front door of BTT by the leader of the team, Murilo Bustamante. “It’s a pleasure to have you guys here,” said Murilo, leading the crew to the dojo where almost 30 guys were already warming up, waiting for their MMA training. As soon as the three Americans entered the academy, Milton Vieira and many other guys came to shake their hands and welcome them. Among those present were Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares, Fabiano Capoani and more than 20 other jiu-jitsu black belts. |
